Tank Parameters for Healthy Acropora
The challenge of Acropora coral care is due to their high sensitivity to changes in water chemistry and demand in terms of light and flow. It sounds simple satisfying the Acros’ needs for a stable environment, however, there is an underlying difficulty to maintaining the parameters. To maintain the reef’s health, there are challenges that make for a moving target as the reef system progressively grows, so there are constant changes to be made.
Water Chemistry – To build a stony skeleton, Acropora corals need Calcium, Alkalinity, and Magnesium.
Water Cleanliness – Two parameters for Acroporas to thrive and grow include keeping nitrate and phosphate levels low.
Light – Acroporas tend to be one of the few corals that truly love light. Some corals that extend upward will receive increased lighting, while the below corals will be left in the shade.
Water Flow – Acroporas are found in areas of the reef with some of the strongest current and in the home aquarium will benefit greatly from strong water movement. To bring nutrients to coral, water movement is essential and more importantly removing waste away from them.
Feeding – There three great sources of food that work well: amino acids, small zooplankton, and simply having fish present.
